Zombie Brains Cupcakes

Hallowe'en Zombie Brains Cupcakes, the perfect addition to your party! www.goodfoodshared.blogspot.com

Oh how I love Hallowe'en! It's the autumnal colours (lots of deciduous trees around our house) and the crisp foggy days with cool nights in front of a roaring fire.
Now added to all of this is a bit of fun, what better than a plateful of Zombie Brain Cupcake, fuelling the ghoulish theme of a Hallowe'en party! These are a basic cupcake recipe with the addition of vanilla buttercream but with a little imagination you have a horror filled treat that's fun for all the family!

The buttercream can be made up to two weeks in advance, once stored in the fridge in an air tight container -let it come up to room temperature before piping - the cupcakes can be made the day before Hallowe'en...easy eh!

Serves 12-14

Ingredients
Dark Pink or Mauve food colouring gel
Black food colouring gel

Equipment
Pallet knife or butter knife
Piping bag
Round icing tip, I used a 9mm round tip

Method
Use any combination of colours that you like for the cupcake papers. If you have actual Hallowe'en papers then all the better...oh if you had Zombie paper cases that would make for an even better finish!!

Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before decorating, nothing worse than melting zombie brains :)

After making my simple vanilla buttercream, I added a small amount of black food colouring gel, mixed thoroughly, then added the pink or mauve food colouring gel until I was happy with the greyish pinkish tinged buttercream....ghoulish!!

Smear a small amount of the buttercream onto all the cooled cupcakes, I used a crank handled pallet knife but the back of a butter knife with do the job just as well.

Place the round tip into your icing bag, load up your bag with the remainder of the buttercream. I happened to have a 9mm round icing tip but a smaller tip will work just as well or if you have no tip at all then snipping the tip off your piping bag will give a very similar result.
Start with a single or double line down the centre of your cupcake, then slowly apply pressure to the piping bag and pipe squiggly lines to represent the left and right hemispheres of the human zombie brain.
I work best holding each cupcake in my hand but if you prefer, place them on a level surface and stand directly over each cupcake as you pipe. Not happy with the finished brain, scrape off the buttercream and start again!

Not gory enough? Add a dab of the pink food colouring gel onto the fresh, bloody brains...aargh!!
